Sonia Rykiel’s impact on fashion ; one of the pioneers of deconstruction

From knits and formal wear, to the most casual of garments, Rykiel made sure to approach her work in a revolutionary fashion during the 1970’s. After more than ten years in the industry, her philosophy sharpened, and she introduced her concept of ‘’ La Démode ‘’ : the idea that being fashionable came from how the wearer chose to present themselves through clothing, and not from what the designer dictated. A progressive method, at the time, to invite people [mainly women] to let loose, be eccentric, be free and let their creativity shine through by adapting fashion to their own body.

The deconstruction movement also came around during those years. She branded herself accordingly as things were shifting politically and socially, people wanted freedom and she took note of that. Introducing garments constructed inside-out, with hems left unfinished. Finishes and linings were refused altogether, and all became raw. She recommended to wear items on bare skin, created pouches and strings with the garments in order to carry them easily, and grafted third and fourth sleeves onto sweaters as a design element. Making her one of the movement’s most relevant references.

The goal was to put the construction forward, making it so direct for the consumer to understand the works behind such items. The embellishment is the work, architectural by nature.
